Combined Sewer Overflow Storage – Houghton Park

Location:

United States, Saint Albans, Vermont

Precaster:

Camp Precast

The Situation:

After experiencing historic flooding, the City of Saint Albans constructed a 500,000 gallon precast box culvert storage system to contain combined stormwater and sewage during precipitation and snow melt events. After an event, the overflow will be pumped into the sewer system for regular treatment. Due to concerns for both water infiltration and exfiltration, a full watertight solution was needed to meet the demands of the storage system.

The Solution:

To protect against water infiltration the box culverts outside joints were sealed with CS-235 Rapid Expansion Waterstop Sealant and CS-212 Exterior Joint Wrap. For the interior joints CS-102 Butyl Rubber Sealant was used along with sealing all interior joints, post assembly, with CS-1500 Rapid Cure Elastomeric Sealant paired with CS-80 primer provided protection against water exfiltration. Both CS-102 and CS-235 were attached in a continuous application to the structure using CS-1550 Instant Grab Adhesive-Sealant.
