BUTYL SEALING TAPES

Installation Instructions

SEALANT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

SURFACE PREPARATION

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED FOR OPTIMUM SEALANT PERFORMANCE

  1. Clean the upper and lower joint surfaces with a stiff bristle brush.
  2. Remove any dirt, debris, flashing, or concrete high points, which could keep the joint from coming together.
  3. ConSeal recommends the use of surface primers (i.e. CS-50, CS-75, CS-300), as primers improve adhesion. When using a primer, allow the primer to dry before placing sealant. The primer will normally be dry to the touch within 15-20 minutes. (Note: Primer can be applied at the job site or at the plant several days in advance of the set.) See ConSeal’s Priming Installation Instructions for additional details.

APPLICATION METHOD

  1. Place sealant on the lower joint in the correct location. DO NOT PLACE ANY JOINTS WITHIN 12” OF A CORNER (SEE FIG 1).
  2. Join the sealant into one continuous strand by kneading the ends together where they meet. DO NOT STRETCH THE SEALANT. DO NOT OVERLAP THE SEALANT (SEE FIG 1).
  3. Once the sealant is installed, DO NOT: STEP ON THE SEALANT. ALLOW DIRT OR DEBRIS TO FALL ON THE SEALANT. Note: Plastic sheeting may be temporarily installed over the sealant if necessary.
  4. Remove plastic sheeting, if installed, and place upper section onto lower section without disturbing the placement of the sealant. The upper casting weight will compress the sealant. A minimum compression of 50% is required. Greater than 50% compression is optimal. It may take 15-20 minutes for the sealant to fully compress. This will vary according to the ambient temperature and the weight being applied. If the gap in the joint is greater than 3/8”, and the casting alignment cannot be further adjusted by applying pressure to the upper piece, the casting should be separated and resealed. To reseal, completely remove the old sealant. Check the alignment of the joint by setting the upper casting without sealant (dry fit). If the gap in the joint exceeds 3/8”, call the precast concrete manufacturer. If the gap is within 3/8”, place new sealant and reset the casting.
